Hospitales San Roque Las Palmas GC

INTERNAL MEDICINE

Internal Medicine is a medical speciality based on the provision of comprehensive healthcare for adults in hospital surroundings and is fully responsible for such care. Hospital surroundings are understood to comprise all hospitalization areas, outpatient consultations, and patients treated at the emergency room.

The comprehensive training of internists provides them with great versatility which allows them to adapt to the ever-changing healthcare needs. This comprehensive and holistic approach makes internists particularly suited to deal with diseases and processes that affect several organs or systems simultaneously, as well as to treat patients with multiple pathologies.

The services offered by Hospitales San Roque Las Palmas de Gran Canaria include:

• Treating patients with infectious diseases, systemic autoimmune diseases or vascular risk
• Treating all kinds of multi-organic symptoms that require a comprehensive approach
• Clinical care for patients in the palliative stage of their illness
• Medical attention for patients who need emergency or urgent care. Internists have the ideal training to take care of emergencies and solve urgent problems.
• Medical care for patients undergoing surgery. During hospitalization, internists must act as the hospital’s general practitioners in order to treat most of the medical problems that arise while taking care of a great number of inter-consultations.
• Development of new areas of knowledge and healthcare for patients with rare diseases not comprised within a well-defined speciality.

Healthcare assistance is carried out at different levels:

First level

• Direct provision of primary healthcare to adults in our outpatient consultation area.

Second level

• Dealing with problems of intermediate complexity in the hospitalization area that were not solved on the first level.

Third level

• Dealing with complex cases which were not solved on the second level.

Besides, other services are:

Consultations focussing on one of several pathologies (lipids, arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, chronic liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease…)

Spain’s National Commission for Health Specialities establishes priority areas of knowledge for which compulsory or recommended rotations are established during the training period. Some of these areas are: pulmonology, cardiology, gastroenterology, clinical immunology and endocrinology.

Halfway between educational and healthcare-oriented activities we find continuing education which entails participating in bibliographic and interdisciplinary clinical sessions as well as attending conferences and congresses.

Thanks to an agreement with the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, we currently take part in the geriatrics educational programme (Professor Dr Pedro Betancor).

In October 2002, Hospitales San Roque Las Palmas de Gran Canaria decided to implement one of the most commonly used quality standards: ISO 9000, (Model 9 Joint International Commission).

Worthy of note is the great interest that the Internal Medicine Department has shown in teaching since, thanks to a collaboration agreement with the School of Medicine of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, they participate in the geriatrics educational programme by carrying out the practical training of fifth year medical students.
